URBIA
printed publication / editor
Urbia is a publication to discuss the neglected implications of architecture for all members of our community. Myself and the two other editors - Lenore Whiteside and Judith Sharkey were architecture students studying at Monash University each coming from creative backgrounds. Frustrated by conventional architectural teachings that focus on commercialism, the “greats of architecture” and convoluted academic discourse; we started the magazine through a desire to elevate the stories of the everyday experience of the built environment and spaces. Through the magazine we hope to be able to diversify the conversation about how people experience space and open the possibilities for architectural discussion to our wider community. With this aim, we sought to emphasise how marginalised identities experience space, and use unconventional understandings of space as a means for exploration. We brought together art, photography, architectural documents and writing (both expository and anecdotal) as mediums to understand our surroundings.
